ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting digital skills development and the freelancing sector in Pakistan following discussions with Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja.
The minister met World Bank Vice President Ousmane Dione during a visit to South Korea, according to an announcement reported on October 21.
Their discussions focused on Pakistan’s digital economy, electronic governance and measures to strengthen information technology infrastructure.
The World Bank expressed its intention to continue technical and financial support for initiatives designed to improve digital skills among young Pakistanis.
Support for the freelancing sector was also discussed as Pakistan seeks to expand opportunities for workers who provide services to international clients.
Digital skills training can help young people participate in software development, design, marketing and other technology-enabled services.
The discussions also covered the role of digital infrastructure in improving government services and supporting wider economic activity.
During the South Korea visit, the minister held separate talks with technology company DeltaX in Seoul.
Those discussions explored opportunities to promote artificial intelligence and digital marketing in Pakistan.
The meetings come as Pakistan seeks to strengthen its information technology industry and increase participation in international digital markets.
The announcement did not specify a new funding amount, project launch date or additional financing agreement arising from the meeting.
Any new programme would require further details on implementation, eligibility and funding before its practical impact could be assessed.
