ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is working toward a more formal framework for competitive gaming, with government plans covering a national e-sports federation, organised championships and opportunities for young players.

The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination outlined the work in a written parliamentary response to MNA Muhammad Farooq Sattar. The response discussed a federal task force and support from the Pakistan Sports Board.

Formal recognition for competitive gaming

The task force is chaired by the head of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and includes public- and private-sector representatives. The Ministry of Information Technology has notified the task force, while the Pakistan Sports Board supports its work.

The proposed framework includes a dedicated national federation and a National E-Sports Championship. These could offer clearer pathways for players and organisers if responsibilities, recognition and eligibility are defined transparently.

Policy approval is not the same as implementation

Earlier government announcements reported cabinet approval of a national e-sports policy. The latest parliamentary response is therefore an update on implementation and institutional work, not a newly announced first approval of the policy.

Outstanding questions include the federation’s operational status, recognition under sports rules and the championship timetable. Establishing a functioning governing organisation requires more than announcing an intention.

Gaming equipment in schools

The Pakistan Sports Board reported providing 20 gaming systems to five public schools in Islamabad at a cost of Rs9.10 million. The equipment may expand access, but structured coaching, supervision, digital literacy and tournament opportunities are needed to develop talent.

Opportunities beyond tournaments

Competitive gaming connects with game development, animation, broadcasting, event production and online content. Training, reliable connectivity, commercial partnerships and clear competition rules could help Pakistan’s gaming community build sustainable careers.

A credible framework must also address competition integrity, player selection, sponsorship, dispute resolution and protection of younger participants.

Next steps

The important milestones are formal establishment and recognition of the federation, publication of a championship timetable and wider implementation of the policy. The school equipment programme is a concrete activity already reported; the broader institutional ambitions still require delivery.
