ISLAMABAD: Work on the N-25 Karachi–Quetta–Chaman highway project has reached 19%, according to figures presented during a federal review of National Highway Authority schemes.
The 273-kilometre project, involving the rehabilitation and dualisation of the highway, has an estimated cost of Rs183.42 billion.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal reviewed progress on major road projects on October 30 and directed officials to accelerate construction, resolve implementation problems and examine contractors’ additional financial claims.
Progress on the N-50 Yarik–Sagu–Zhob road, including the Zhob Bypass, stood at 10%. The project has a reported cost of Rs76.49 billion.
Other schemes are further advanced. The Shandur–Gilgit Road has reached 67% completion, while the Chitral–Booni–Mastuj–Shandur Road stands at 40%.
The figures show considerable differences in construction progress across projects being implemented under the federal development programme.
Cost increases under scrutiny
Iqbal ordered closer examination of proposed cost escalations, changes in construction quantities and additional claims submitted by contractors.
He also called for independent verification of project costs and construction quality.
Some schemes have yet to enter full construction. The Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway remains at the procurement stage, while land acquisition and resettlement issues are affecting the Rajanpur–Dera Ghazi Khan section of the Indus Highway.
The minister instructed officials to identify projects that could be completed with limited additional funding and prepare a report for the prime minister on outstanding financial and implementation problems.
He specifically called for faster work on the Karachi–Kararo and Wadh–Khuzdar sections of the N-25.
The review provides an updated picture of progress on several important road corridors, although revised completion dates were not announced for every project.
