ISLAMABAD, November 4, 2026: Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani has warned that any attempt to block or divert Pakistan’s legitimate share of water would be treated as an act of war.

Addressing the opening ceremony of Pakistan Water Week 2026 in Islamabad on November 2, Gilani said water must not be used as a means of political pressure.

He maintained that the Indus Waters Treaty remained a binding international agreement and could not be changed or suspended unilaterally.

Calls for Stronger Water Management

Gilani emphasised the importance of water security for Pakistan’s agriculture, food supply and economic development.

He called for greater investment in water conservation, efficient irrigation, modern management technologies and climate-resilient farming practices.

The remarks come amid continuing disagreements between Pakistan and India over the treaty governing the Indus river system.

Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that its rights under the agreement must be respected.
