Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the newly established Pakistan-China Research Center for Party and State Governance, an initiative aimed at strengthening institutional and policy cooperation between the two countries.

Gilani accepted the position at the centre’s inauguration in Islamabad on November 1, according to Pakistan’s Press Information Department.

Focus on governance and parliamentary cooperation

The centre, established by the Pakistan-China Economic and Cultural Council, aims to connect researchers, universities, think tanks and public institutions from both countries.

Addressing the ceremony, Gilani said the initiative could promote exchanges among parliamentarians, policymakers and academics while supporting research on governance and institutional development.

He highlighted China’s experience in economic planning, poverty reduction, digital governance and industrial development as areas from which Pakistan could draw lessons.

Gilani also connected the initiative to the next phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, identifying agriculture, technology, industrial development and green growth as areas for deeper collaboration.

The inauguration was attended by Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and a visiting Chinese delegation.

The initiative is expected to provide a platform for research and dialogue, rather than introduce immediate changes to Pakistan’s governance system.
