ISLAMABAD — The federal government has reduced the price of petrol to Rs389.03 per litre and high-speed diesel to Rs404.97 per litre, with the revised rates taking effect from September 29.

Petrol has been cut by Rs2.27 per litre from Rs391.30, while high-speed diesel, or HSD, has been reduced by Rs3.56 from Rs408.53 per litre.

The revision was announced after the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority reviewed petroleum prices under the government’s pricing mechanism. The Petroleum Division said changes in international Platts rates, premiums and other incidentals had contributed to the latest adjustment.

New petrol and diesel rates

The September 29 revision brings petrol back below Rs390 per litre, although fuel prices remain elevated compared with levels seen before the latest period of international energy-market volatility.

HSD remains above Rs400 per litre despite the larger reduction. Diesel prices are particularly important for the wider economy because the fuel is extensively used in freight, agriculture and commercial transport.

Changes in diesel costs can therefore feed into transport and distribution expenses even when the movement at the pump is relatively small.

The new prices apply from September 29 under the government’s current petroleum pricing arrangements.

International prices remain important

Pakistan imports a large share of the petroleum products and crude oil required to meet domestic demand, leaving local prices sensitive to movements in international markets as well as freight, premiums and the rupee-dollar exchange rate.

The Petroleum Division specifically linked the latest revision to changes in international pricing benchmarks and related costs.

That means a one-day reduction does not by itself establish a longer-term direction for domestic fuel prices. Future adjustments will continue to depend on movements in the underlying international and domestic components used in the pricing formula.

For households and businesses, the immediate effect is a modest reduction in the per-litre cost of the two most widely used transport fuels.

Motorists buying 40 litres of petrol would pay about Rs90.80 less than under the previous rate, while a 40-litre purchase of HSD would cost about Rs142.40 less.

The actual impact on monthly transport expenses will vary according to fuel consumption, while any broader effect on freight and consumer prices will depend on how long the lower rates remain in place and how other costs move.
