Pakistan and Oman exchanged six cooperation documents in Islamabad on 14 October following the eighth session of their Joint Ministerial Commission, attended by senior officials from both countries.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the exchange during the visit of Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar represented Pakistan in the ministerial talks.
What the documents cover
The package comprised an agreement on mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic, special, official and service passports; four memoranda of understanding covering information technology and telecommunications, broadcasting, news and media cooperation, and archives and historical records; and a protocol recording the minutes of the commission’s eighth session.
The visa agreement concerns specified official passport categories, not a general visa waiver for all Pakistani and Omani travellers.
Wider cooperation discussed
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the talks also addressed trade and investment, agriculture, oil and gas, labour mobility and skills development. The two sides discussed joint working groups and greater engagement between their business communities.
Both governments also emphasised dialogue and freedom of navigation amid regional tensions affecting Gulf shipping routes.
The exchanged documents establish areas for cooperation; they do not by themselves demonstrate that new commercial projects have started or that travel rules for ordinary passport holders have changed.
