Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has called for a report on private-school safety legislation within 15 days after a deadly school roof collapse in Peshawar on October 15.
The governor also directed officials to enforce existing safety regulations and prepare proposals for new legislation, according to an October 16 Governor House statement.
Officials told the meeting that the school operated on a leased 16-marla plot, had been registered in 2026 and had failed to follow prescribed safety procedures. Those details come from the government’s account of the briefing.
Focus turns to inspections
The governor’s instructions raise an immediate question for education authorities: how quickly can they identify other school buildings that may be unsafe?
A legislative report may recommend changes, but inspections and enforcement will determine whether existing risks are addressed.
Separately, the provincial education department has ordered a safety audit of government school buildings and directed officials to move pupils out of unsafe premises, Dawn reported on October 18.
That order concerns government schools, while the governor’s request addresses private-school regulation. Both efforts will require follow-up from the relevant authorities.
Officials have not yet published a comprehensive list of buildings inspected, schools closed or alternative classroom arrangements.
