TANK: Shamshad Khan Mehsud, a senior official of the Election Commission of Pakistan, was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district, according to police.
Tank District Police Officer Samad Khan said motorcycle-riding gunmen opened fire on Mehsud after he had attended a condolence gathering in the Girra Baloch area. Reports differ on whether he died at the scene or while being taken to hospital; his death was confirmed by police.
Mehsud, who was originally from Waziristan and lived in Islamabad, was described in some reporting as having previously served in a senior provincial election role. He was in Tank following the death of his elder brother, according to the police account.
Police cordoned off the area and began searching for the attackers. Investigators were examining possible motives, including a potential terrorism link, but had not established responsibility at the time of the report.
Tank and surrounding districts have experienced repeated attacks on police, officials and local security figures. That broader security context should not be treated as proof of who carried out this killing.
Reports have also used the name Shamshad Akhtar and differing titles for the official. Pakistan Report uses Shamshad Khan Mehsud, as reported by multiple outlets, pending authoritative clarification.
