President Asif Ali Zardari has called for Pakistan and Russia to expand cooperation in trade, energy and transport connectivity following talks with Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev in Islamabad.

During the October 13 meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Zardari said the two countries should use existing bilateral mechanisms to turn their diplomatic relations into greater economic activity, according to an official statement.

The president cited bilateral trade of $243.412 million in financial year 2025, saying commercial exchanges remained below their potential.

He identified oil and gas cooperation as an area of interest and called for stronger transport connections, including links through Central Asia and the International North-South Transport Corridor.

Zardari also raised the possibility of restoring direct flights and improving cargo services between the two countries.

On travel and education, he sought easier visa arrangements for Pakistani businesspeople, tourists and students and highlighted difficulties faced by some Pakistanis studying in Russia.

The discussions also covered regional security and tensions affecting maritime transport and energy infrastructure.

Kolokoltsev acknowledged the potential for increased bilateral trade and invited Zardari to visit Russia.

The meeting produced calls for expanded cooperation, but the official announcement did not identify a newly signed trade, energy or transport agreement.
