Hurricane Simon battered Mexico’s Pacific coast with heavy rain and strong winds on Monday, October 12, as authorities continued rescue and recovery operations following deadly flooding linked to former Tropical Storm Rachel.
At least five people had died across Mexico in weather-related incidents, according to an Associated Press report published on October 12. Four deaths were reported in Baja California, where Rachel’s remnants caused serious flooding, and one person died after a wall collapsed in Chilpancingo, Guerrero state.
In Ensenada, Baja California, floodwaters swept away vehicles and damaged homes. Officials reported six people missing as of Monday evening. The Mexican military used helicopters to rescue 32 people from a ranch in the municipality, according to the AP.
Farther south, Simon’s rain and wind brought down trees and electricity poles, blocked roads and flooded homes in Guerrero, including areas around Acapulco. Simon remained offshore near western Mexico, but its outer bands affected coastal communities. The US National Hurricane Center warned of potentially dangerous flooding and mudslides.
The storm’s track, intensity and local impact may change. Residents should follow updated bulletins from Mexico’s meteorological and civil-protection authorities rather than relying on earlier forecasts.
