KARACHI: The Sindh government and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have agreed to mobilise $40 million for development projects in the province.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and a UNIDO delegation led by Deputy Director General Fatou Haidara in Karachi on October 22.

The two sides discussed potential cooperation in climate-resilient infrastructure, rural development, inclusive economic growth and job creation.

Focus on climate resilience and rural development

The proposed collaboration comes as Sindh continues to address the long-term effects of extreme weather and the devastating floods of 2022.

Climate-resilient infrastructure is intended to help communities and public services better withstand future environmental shocks, while rural development programmes can support economic opportunities outside major cities.

The meeting also identified inclusive economic growth and employment generation as priorities for cooperation between the provincial government and UNIDO.

Building on existing cooperation

During the meeting, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah appreciated UNIDO’s role in rehabilitating rural communities affected by the 2022 floods.

The proposed $40 million development initiative will strengthen cooperation between the Sindh government and UNIDO, with a focus on climate resilience, rural development, inclusive economic growth and employment generation.

The collaboration reflects the provincial government’s efforts to expand development partnerships and support sustainable economic opportunities across Sindh.
