ISLAMABAD: The federal government has reduced petrol by Rs2.71 per litre while increasing high-speed diesel by 31 paisas under revised petroleum prices taking effect on Thursday, October 22. The Petroleum Division’s notification sets petrol at Rs379.31 per litre and diesel at Rs390.11 per litre.

What has changed?

The revision moves the two principal transport fuels in opposite directions. Petrol is used widely in motorcycles, cars and smaller vehicles; diesel is essential for freight, buses, agricultural machinery and parts of industry. The adjustments are modest compared with overall prices, with petrol still near Rs380 and diesel above Rs390 per litre. The latest notification is therefore a limited change rather than broad energy-cost relief.

Taxes remain a major component

The fuel-pricing framework includes substantial government taxes and duties. Figures reported alongside the revision put their combined burden at approximately Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 on diesel. Retail prices are shaped not only by international crude and refined-product prices, but also by the exchange rate, supply costs and domestic fiscal decisions.

Why diesel matters

Diesel costs can influence the expenses of trucking businesses, bus operators and agricultural producers. What matters more is the direction of future revisions and whether elevated prices persist.

What consumers should watch

Pakistan remains exposed to movements in global oil markets and risks to energy shipping routes. For now, petrol is cheaper by Rs2.71, diesel is more expensive by 31 paisas, and both fuels remain costly by historical standards.
