Pakistan has raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices for a fifth consecutive review, pushing diesel above Rs400 per litre as global energy costs remain under pressure from the Middle East conflict.

The latest revision increased petrol by Rs5.02 to Rs375.82 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs5.28 to Rs403.32 per litre. The new rates are effective through September 14.

The increase extends a rapid series of adjustments. Over five consecutive reviews, petrol has risen by Rs29.95 per litre while diesel has increased by Rs25.27 per litre.

What changed

The immediate development is not simply another routine price notification. Diesel has crossed the Rs400-per-litre threshold while the government is adjusting domestic fuel prices much more frequently than under the previous fortnightly system.

Pakistan shifted toward more frequent fuel-price reviews as international oil markets became increasingly volatile during the renewed Middle East conflict. Disruption around major energy routes has increased uncertainty over crude and refined-product supplies.

Why it matters

Diesel prices affect much more than motorists. High-speed diesel is widely used in freight, agriculture and transport, so sustained increases can feed into the cost of moving food and other goods across the country.

Petrol increases directly raise commuting costs for households and businesses. The cumulative effect of repeated revisions can also complicate budgeting because prices are changing faster than under the older schedule.

The latest increase therefore adds another source of cost pressure at a time when energy markets remain unusually sensitive to developments in the Middle East.

What happens next

The current rates remain in force through September 14. Further revisions will depend heavily on international petroleum prices and the government’s pricing mechanism.

For consumers and businesses, the key question is whether global energy markets stabilise or whether continued disruption produces another round of domestic increases.
