The government has revised the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme, removing the five-litre restriction linked to relief tokens for eligible motorcycles, Qingqis and rickshaws and making scheme-related SMS messages free.
Under the revised mechanism, eligible two- and three-wheeler users can receive four tokens each month, with each token providing Rs500 in fuel relief. The change means a beneficiary no longer has to purchase five litres in a single transaction to use a token and can instead buy fuel according to their requirement.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Sunday that more than 2.2 million people had registered under the scheme and that 92% of registered beneficiaries were motorcycle, Qingqi and rickshaw users. He also said the five-litre limit had been removed and SMS charges waived.
The changes follow feedback received during the scheme’s initial rollout. Earlier government information said the minimum five-litre purchase requirement had created difficulties for people who typically buy smaller quantities of fuel.
The arrangement for vehicles up to 800cc remains different: the government says those users receive a Rs100-per-litre discount on up to 10 litres every ten days.
Why it matters
The revision is aimed at making the targeted fuel subsidy easier to use for people who rely on motorcycles and three-wheelers and often purchase petrol in small quantities. Its impact will depend on registration, token redemption and implementation at filling stations nationwide.
