ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for filing Sales Tax and Federal Excise Duty returns for the August 2026 tax period to October 2 for specified categories of taxpayers.
The extension is not a blanket change for every sales tax filer.
It applies to electricity distribution companies, K-Electric and taxpayers covered by Sales Tax General Order No. 10 of 2026, according to the FBR directive.
The relief concerns filing of the relevant August 2026 Sales Tax and Federal Excise returns and is subject to the condition that the tax liability was paid by the prescribed payment date.
That distinction means taxpayers covered by the extension should not interpret the October 2 filing date as a general postponement of the underlying tax payment obligation.
FBR issued the extension after the normal filing timetable for the August tax period, providing additional time to submit the return for the categories specified in the directive.
Sales tax returns are used to report taxable supplies, input tax, output tax and other information required under the federal sales tax framework. Federal excise returns cover applicable duties under the Federal Excise Act and related rules.
Electricity distribution companies and K-Electric operate within a specialised billing and tax environment involving large volumes of customer transactions, while STGO No. 10 of 2026 applies to a defined group of taxpayers under the sales tax administration framework.
The extension therefore needs to be read according to its stated scope rather than as a general deadline change across Pakistan’s entire registered taxpayer population.
For eligible taxpayers, the practical deadline for filing the relevant August return is now October 2, 2026.
The underlying payment condition remains important. FBR’s relief is tied to taxpayers having discharged the applicable sales tax liability by the prescribed date, meaning the filing extension does not automatically provide extra time for tax that should already have been paid.
This measure is separate from the Tax Year 2026 income tax return deadline and concerns Sales Tax and Federal Excise returns for the August 2026 period.
Businesses should therefore identify which filing regime and taxpayer category applies to them before relying on the extension.
The confirmed development is narrowly defined: DISCOs, K-Electric and taxpayers falling under STGO No. 10 of 2026 have until October 2 to file the specified August 2026 Sales Tax/FED returns, subject to FBR’s payment condition.
Taxpayers outside those categories should not assume that the same extension applies to their returns.
