The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) ended Monday’s trading session lower, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index falling 453.63 points, or 0.27%, to close at 165,966.08.

The index had finished the previous session at 166,419.71, according to official PSX market data.

Trading remained volatile during the day, with the benchmark briefly moving into positive territory before renewed selling pressure pushed it towards the session’s low.

Market gives up early gains

The KSE-100 Index reached an intraday high of 166,698.46 points before retreating to a low of 165,918.34.

Although the market recovered during parts of the session, it struggled to sustain the gains and finished near its lowest level of the day.

Selling pressure affected several major index constituents, including United Bank Limited, Engro Holdings, Systems Limited, Hub Power Company and Sazgar Engineering Works.

Market commentary from brokerage firm Topline Securities pointed to limited positive catalysts and concerns about elevated international oil prices as factors weighing on investor sentiment.

Most listed companies close lower

Of the 499 companies traded on Monday, 163 recorded gains, 302 declined and 34 remained unchanged.

Trading volume in the ready market stood at approximately 370.94 million shares, compared with 396.90 million shares in the previous session.

The total value of shares traded increased to around Rs19.56 billion from Rs18.68 billion.

Pakistan Refinery was among the most actively traded stocks, with approximately 52.93 million shares changing hands. Cnergyico PK and TPL Trakker also recorded substantial trading volumes.

Investors remain cautious

The decline followed a modest gain on Friday, when the KSE-100 Index rose approximately 234 points.

Monday’s session reflected continued caution among investors as they assessed international commodity prices, domestic economic conditions and the outlook for listed companies.

The next trading sessions will show whether buying interest returns after the latest decline.
