ISLAMABAD, October 30, 2026 — Pakistan and the Philippines have discussed strengthening cooperation in intellectual property protection, technology transfer and innovation to support businesses, research institutions and trade between the two countries.
The discussions took place in Manila on October 29 during a meeting between Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan) Director General Nauman Aslam and Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines Director General Teodoro C. Pascua.
Pakistan’s delegation was led by Ambassador Asma Rabbani, with Trade and Investment Counsellor Fareeha Khan also participating.
According to an official announcement, the two sides explored the possibility of establishing a formal framework for continued cooperation between their intellectual property institutions.
The proposed arrangement could take the form of a memorandum of understanding under the Joint Economic Commission framework.
Areas identified for cooperation included intellectual property legislation, registration and examination procedures, enforcement, public awareness and the commercial use of intellectual property rights.
The discussions also covered technology transfer and support for innovation, including cooperation between institutions that help researchers and universities develop commercial applications for their work.
Both countries expressed interest in strengthening technology transfer offices and supporting university-based initiatives that connect research with business opportunities.
Another area of discussion was the protection and promotion of geographical indications.
Geographical indications identify products whose characteristics, reputation or quality are linked to a particular place of origin.
Stronger registration, quality assurance, branding and marketing practices could help producers protect the identity of such products and improve their commercial opportunities.
Officials also discussed exchanging information, sharing institutional experience and arranging reciprocal visits to strengthen cooperation between the two organisations.
Intellectual property protection plays an important role in helping businesses safeguard trademarks, inventions, designs and other commercially valuable work.
The meeting reflects efforts to expand economic and institutional ties between Pakistan and the Philippines through closer cooperation on innovation and intellectual property management.
