ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is seeking to expand its exports to the Maldives by developing commercial opportunities in food products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, surgical instruments and construction materials.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan outlined the opportunities at the Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum in Islamabad, held on October 22.
The forum brought together government officials and business representatives from both countries, with Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also in attendance.
The discussions took place as Pakistan and the Maldives marked 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Food and agricultural exports
Jam Kamal said Pakistan was positioned to supply a wider range of agricultural and food products to the Maldivian market.
He identified rice, meat, halal food, processed agricultural products and fresh fruit among potential export categories.
The minister specifically mentioned mangoes, citrus fruits, cherries, apricots, peaches and dates as products with export potential.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s emerging olive oil industry as a possible source of premium products for overseas markets.
Opportunities beyond food
The minister identified pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, textiles and construction-related goods as additional sectors in which Pakistani businesses could develop commercial links.
He also pointed to opportunities in information technology, digital infrastructure, technology-enabled services, transport and port-related supply chains.
Tourism and hospitality were discussed as areas for cooperation, with the minister suggesting that Pakistan could benefit from Maldivian experience in hospitality management and professional training.
Trade connections and business support
Jam Kamal stressed the importance of stronger air and maritime connectivity to support bilateral trade.
He said improved transport links would help businesses access markets and overcome logistical difficulties.
The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) was ready to assist business delegations and connect Maldivian buyers with suitable Pakistani exporters, according to the minister.
He also invited Maldivian officials and business representatives to participate in an upcoming international food exhibition in Pakistan.
The government highlighted the Pakistan Single Window initiative and other trade-facilitation measures as part of efforts to simplify import and export procedures.
The forum reinforced both countries’ interest in developing closer business-to-business links and identifying new opportunities for bilateral trade.
