Pakistan has set a December 2027 target to privatise nine electricity distribution companies, according to reporting on the government’s latest discussions with the International Monetary Fund.

The timeline shared with the IMF envisages selling Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, Gujranwala Electric Power Company and Islamabad Electric Supply Company in the first quarter of 2027. FESCO is targeted for January, GEPCO for February and IESCO for March, according to the reported schedule.

The next phase would cover Hyderabad Electric Supply Company and Sukkur Electric Power Company between April and June 2027. Peshawar, Hazara, Lahore and Multan distribution companies are targeted to follow by December 2027. Quetta Electric Supply Company is not included in the plan.

Official records confirm that the privatisation process is already under way but that the companies are at different transaction stages. The National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatisation was told in September that due diligence had been completed for the first batch and that the approved structure allows divestment of 51% to 100% shareholding along with management control.

The December 2027 date remains a government target rather than a completed transaction timetable. Execution will depend on investor participation, regulatory work and completion of the individual sale processes.
