Mashreq has introduced NEO BIZ in Pakistan, a digital banking platform designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, sole proprietors and self-employed professionals.

The launch expands the bank’s digital services beyond personal banking and into a segment where businesses frequently face difficulties managing payments, maintaining financial records and accessing formal financial products.

NEO BIZ brings together digital account management, payments and collections, with the bank planning to introduce additional business tools as the platform develops.

Banking built around smaller enterprises

Small businesses are a major source of employment and commercial activity in Pakistan, but many continue to rely on cash transactions, manual records and fragmented financial services.

For a business owner, even routine tasks such as collecting customer payments, managing supplier transactions and reconciling accounts can consume time that could otherwise be spent on operations and growth.

Mashreq says its new proposition is intended to simplify those processes through a digital-first approach.

The platform is designed to allow eligible businesses to open and manage accounts digitally, reducing their dependence on conventional branch-based banking.

The bank also plans to expand its offering to include business debit and virtual cards, payroll services, invoice-based payments, transaction analytics and bookkeeping capabilities.

Why the SME market matters

Pakistan’s small-business sector is large but underserved by conventional finance.

Businesses without reliable transaction histories or formal records often struggle to demonstrate their financial position when applying for credit.

Digital banking tools can help create more consistent records of sales, collections and expenses, potentially improving the information available to both business owners and financial institutions.

Mashreq has also outlined longer-term ambitions involving invoicing, tax facilitation, supply-chain services and cash-flow-based financing.

Competition in digital financial services

Pakistan’s banking industry has been expanding digital payments and remote account services as more consumers and merchants move away from cash-only transactions.

NEO BIZ enters a market where banks and fintech companies are competing to serve merchants, freelancers and smaller enterprises.

Mashreq’s challenge will be to make the service practical for businesses with different levels of digital familiarity, including those outside major urban centres.

For prospective customers, the key questions will be eligibility, charges, transaction limits and which services are immediately operational.
