United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Nicholas James Foxall of Australia as Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).
The appointment, announced on November 2, places Foxall in charge of the UN’s longest-running peacekeeping operation.
Experienced military leader
Foxall succeeds Major General Patrick Gauchat of Switzerland, whose assignment concluded in February 2026.
According to the United Nations, Foxall has more than 32 years of military experience, including international assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor.
His background includes senior leadership roles in the Australian Defence Force and participation in multinational operations.
UNTSO’s role in the Middle East
Established in 1948, UNTSO was the United Nations’ first peacekeeping operation.
Its military observers monitor ceasefire arrangements, maintain contact with relevant parties and support other UN peacekeeping missions in the region.
The organisation primarily performs observation, liaison and reporting duties rather than combat operations.
As Head of Mission, Foxall will oversee UNTSO’s personnel and activities as it continues its regional monitoring mandate.
